Fresh strawberry picking and the Farmer's Market

The morning dawned overcast (my favorite kind of day), with a crisp cool breeze in the air. The sun was hiding behind the skies making it known that it would make an appearance later in the day. I loaded up Micah and Nathan and off to Picha Farms we went. I was pleasantly surprised to see a parking lot full of people, some buying pre-picked berries and a couple dozen already in the fields. We got our flat and headed out to the fields. We were assigned a row by the field boss and we started picking. I can't even describe to you how juicy, red and plump these berries were! So I took some pictures so you could enjoy. We easily loaded our flat in about 10 minutes and paid our $12.00 (THAT'S A STEAL!!!) and headed down the road anticipating the taste of freshly picked and washed strawberries when we got home. And let me tell you, they did NOT disappoint! These are the kind of berries you don't need sugar or whipped cream for - they are delicious all on their own! I think we'll go back next week and pick 2 flats - one for freezing and one for eating!

On our way home, we stopped by our local farmer's market. I needed potatoes, but of course, came away with so much more! Carrots, with their fuzzy little tops still on (a favorite of Nathan and mine so we can pretend we're Bugs Bunny), gorgeous Walla Walla sweet onions, asparagus, Yakima sweet cherries (yes, they are as good as they look), white potatoes and a bunch of stunning looking beets! Yes, beets! I've never cooked with them before so I can't wait to try out a couple new recipes, but I need to go get some gloves first.

Nature's bounty is stunning and there is just no other type of food out there than can compete with locally grown, fresh fruits and veggies! God provided humans with everything we need and we're thrilled to enjoy it!!
