Homemade Applesauce

My sister Kylla texted me yesterday asking if she needed to add water when making homemade applesauce. I had to think for a minute because it's been years since I made my own applesauce - like when Micah and Nathan were babies - years. She successfully made her applesauce (with cranberries - yum!!), and I got to thinking, why haven't I made it lately? It's quite pricey to buy in the grocery store, and it's never as good as homemade. It also has preservatives and such things in it - yuck. So Kylla inspired me to whip up a batch this afternoon.

I used a basic recipe I found on line (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/sarahs-applesauce/detail.aspx), but this recipe can be modified to add yummy ingredients and/or spices. I made the basic recipe, but added some cardamom, my favorite new spice, and extra cinnamon.

Boy oh boy! I can't wait to make more and a bigger batch! Our friend Dave has several apple trees in his backyard, and when he shares his apples (even when they are small - hint, hint, Uncle Dave), they make wonderful pie, applesauce, and more!

Homemade Applesauce
Ingredients:
4 apples, cored, peeled and chopped
3/4 cup water
1/4 cup sugar
1 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp cardamom

1. In a saucepan, combine apples, water, sugar, and cinnamon.

2. Cover, and cook over medium heat for 15 to 20 minutes, or until apples are soft.

3. Allow to cool, then mash with a fork or potato masher.

  1. Yummo! I love homemade applesauce :) I used to make it with my first graders for Johnny Appleseed Day. I still make it every fall :) We use the same recipe! I'm interested in adding cranberries to it! I think I shall try!
