Camping at Margaret McKenny

This weekend we did a little impromptu camping trip. I am not a camper. I don't enjoy it very much, but my boys (all three of them) really do, so I have committed to one camping trip in the summer, and they do all the rest on their own. But I have to say, this trip was pretty enjoyable. WA state has a number of campgrounds that are "free" to stay at - at least they were free until July 1, when the state decided that you had to buy an annual $30 pass to stay at the "free" campgrounds...silly, but still cheaper than many of the other campgrounds that are $15 and $20 a night. We found a little place outside of Olympia (our state capitol) and Andy and the boys headed down there on Thursday, and I joined them Friday afternoon after work.

The campground was quite lovely (although rustic), and we had a great big space where we could put up both tents (one for us, one for the boys) and have plenty of space for both cars. It was on top of a little creek that we hiked down to and threw rocks into, and was near the Mima Falls, a little waterfall that we hiked 2.5 miles up and 2.5 miles back down in order to view and snap a few pics! We also were near the Mima Mounds - a natural, geologic phenomenon that creates big mounds on prairies and look kinda funny, but neat! We did a little tour of the mounds, read all about them and snapped more pictures!

All in all, it was a fun trip, except for the pit toilets (YUCK!) and the very cold night where I froze in our tent!

I do have to post this funny picture of the pass we had to put on our car at the campsite...just laughed and laughed at their misspelling!

  1. you are very lucky to have such beautiful mountains right at your fingertips every day ;o) We need some of that cool weather ;o) Although, freezing in a tent is not my cup of tea.....I'd rather be hot! Love the Great OUTOORS ;-)
